I always feel sorry for the Doctor when he's "between companions" too. It gives him too much time to do things he might regret *points to waters of mars* and he has to think about the fact that while everyone else has something to go back to, home, family, friends, ect, he's all alone and always will be. They can only come with him for so long, then he's on his own again.
